Avion, also known as Delta Phoenix, is the fifth of sixteen Colossi which the protagonist, Wander, must slay in Shadow of the Colossus.

Contents

LocationEdit

This Colossus, as its nickname name may suggest, resembles a mythological bird called the phoenix. It is mostly stone, though it has patches of fur on the top of its body which allow Wander to hold on as the creature soars over its territory.

BattleEdit

Avion's perch is over a large lake which is scattered with ruins. Wander must make his way to the center of the lake, where he can stand on one of three platforms forming a bridge between two structures. From there, he must shoot Avion, enraging it and causing it to swoop down at him. While it is, the player should stand at the outer platforms, and jump up to grab onto the fur on the side of the Colossus' wings.

The Colossus' sigils which mark its weak spots are located on the tip of its tail, on the tips of each wing. If Wander shoots at Avion before jumping into the lake, he will fly up to the tower and beat his wings with enough force to knock Wander over and send him rolling backwards down the stairs.

In Hard mode, Avion will turn more and make longer barrel rolls after being stabbed.

Meaning of NameEdit

Avion is a stylization of the Latin word Avis, and is used in French and Spanish for the words "air" or "airplane."

Avis Praeda roughly translates to "bird of prey." This relates Avion's resemblance to members of the raptor family.

Avis is the singular form of the Latin word for "bird."

Praeda in Latin means various things depending upon the subject. When speaking of animals, it literally means "prey." In other uses, it means "booty", "plunder", or "gain." It always refers to something that is taken. From this word we get the English word "predator."

Trivia Edit

  • It is possible to land on one of the ruined structures in the lake by jumping onto one from Avion. While on the structures, if Avion flies near or over you, it will generate wind that knocks Wander off, however, you can hang on to the side to avoid it. If Wander shoots Avion, it will fly over and flap it's wings at Wander causing him to fly very far off the structure.
  • Avion is the second most peaceful Colossus, next to Phalanx.
