Pelagia, also known as the Great Sea Monster, is the twelfth of sixteen Colossi which the protagonist, Wander, must slay in Shadow of the Colossus.

LocationEdit

To find Pelagia, you should head northeast of the Shrine of Worship. Eventually you will head through a forest, at which point you should look to the right of the entrance to another exit, which leads them onto a path overlooking some waterfalls. Make your way past the save shrine, and carefully hop around the pillar. If you want to, you can try to jump across the waterfall dividers, but be careful not to fall, as death is almost instantaneous. If you do fall in, quickly hold R1 to go underwater, so that you can swim faster. Swim diagonally, so that you can get behind one of the structures, and hop back on. If you do make it across, you'll be rewarded with a nice view. Once you've goofed off enough, swim underneath the huge bridge (you cannot climb it, sadly) and step onto the blackened platform. Your fight will start.

BattleEdit

This Colossus somewhat resembles a sea monster, with two usually white tusks at the corners of its mouth. If these should start to glow yellow, it means that Pelagia is about to shoot at Wander. The player should probably seek shelter in the water

Briefly dive underwater to look for a small opening between its leg and body to get behind it. Once you get to its back, grab onto the patch of fur there and climb up. An alternate method is to swim (diving for as much as possible to avoid its attacks) to an intact building, hide behind a pillar, wait for Pelagia to approach as close to the building as possible, and then jump from the ledge connected to the platform onto its 'beak' before climbing upwards.

Make your way up to its head, and note; its "teeth" can be used as means of steering. For instance, the set on the right will make it turn right, the set at the front will make it go forward, and the set to the left will make it turn left. Steer it into one of the tall, round buildings and jump onto the structure. Shoot at the tips of its tusks to provoke it and it will rear up and put it legs up on the building, allowing you to jump onto its belly where the sigil—which signifies its weak point is located.

Continue this process until the beast falls.

On Hard level, it shakes it's head a lot more when you are on top of it.

Meaning of NameEdit

Pelagia comes from the Greek word for "open sea." Any water in the ocean that is not too close to the bottom is referred to as the pelagic zone.

Permagnus Pistrix roughly translates as "the Greatest Sea Monster."

Permagnus is an adaptation of magnus ("great" or "large"). The perm- prefix added means "very." Used in this manner, it can mean "the greatest."

Pistrix is a Latin word that means "sea monster." It has been used to refer to whales, sharks, and saw-fish. It is related to the Latin word piscis which means "fish."
